And let's start with that now :) 09:06:12 #topic general discussion (30 min) 09:07:37 Let's see how many will bring stuff up :) 09:07:55 Just a general note that I got the Torronsuo 3.2.0.12 update yesterday, and it seems to work fine. What really matters for me is that the bug with multiple contact sources was fixed. 09:08:47 Is there any chance Jolla could provide a way to acquire Alien Dalvik license separately for community ported devices? The new Android 8 version from XA2 is potentially compatible with many of them on same Android base without or with small modifications. 09:08:52 Yes the early access was released yesterday. Great that you are happy with the changes and fixes ExTechOp :) 09:10:12 I can start with throwing out another question into the room: Has anyone started looking at Fairphone 3? Or has maybe the siscussions between jolla and fairphone gone somewhere? 09:10:49 s/siscussion/discussion/ 09:10:50 TheKit[m]: There has been discussions about that before. Unfortunately due to those (even small) changes and modifications, we don't have the time and resources available to make it happen. The issue here is that it does not end with making those changes. There are always hundreds of smaller things that we need to take care of in order to have a deliverable and presentable product which takes such a long time. 09:11:45 TheKit[m]: But never say never. This might become something that we can consider in the future :) 09:13:07 jwalck: I'm sure the community is eagerly looking at the FP3 as it should be a great target for porting. As for discussions between Jolla and FP, I can't say that there has been a progress recently. But it's a very new phone and I can imagine that FP is super busy with it at the moment. So let's see what the future brings! We are on very good relations with FP :) 09:14:23 good good! yes it's a good target since they tend to stay around for a long time compared to almost all other phones 09:14:46 Yeah just like Jolla 1 is still getting updates ;) 09:14:48 my fairphone 2 has plenty left in it so will be years before I swap I hope, but by then I hope we'll have good support:) 09:15:19 By the way: is the Sony Xperia XA2 magnetic compass supposed to work, because I haven't got it to do anything very useful? https://together.jolla.com/question/211542/sony-xperia-xa2-magnetic-compass/ 09:15:46 My Jolla 1 reached its limit years ago I'm afraid:) 09:18:42 jwalck, do you recommend the FP then (as a device, rather than a philosophy!)? 09:19:02 ExTechOp: The compass on the XA2 does work, but it has some issues: For instance if you are walking around, it moves a lot all the time. But when you stand still it should be quite stable. 09:21:09 flypig: not sure I can seperate the two! There are more modern, faster phones with bettery battery life for less than the FP2. But you get what you pay for and fair mineral sourcing and fair wages for workers is important and that there are phones that compromise with these things is a very real issue 09:21:34 ViGe For me it does react to rotation of the phone, but doesn't eg. do a proper 360° circle. 09:21:58 And the csd tool thing I mentioned in the above Together text. 09:22:14 ExTechOp: Are you by any chance using a phone cover which has a magnet in it? They tend to mess with the compass 09:23:18 flypig: I'm happy with my fairphone 2 as a device - stands a lot of abuse and works well for all the things I need. I sometimes wish for a faster browser but that's frivolous:) 09:23:21 No magnets there, although I do have a magnetic implant in my hand :-D but it fails also in my other hand. 09:23:40 jwalck, thanks for that. I guess there will always be more modern, faster, phones, but it sounds like you're very happy with the balance. 09:24:25 ExTechOp: Have you calibrated the compass by waving your phone in a figure 8? 09:24:57 Quoting the Together text: "esting the compass using the csd tool gives me a fail on the compass sensor test: repeated attempts of waving the device around in a figure-eight does not seem to calibrate the sensor (messages are "Pass calibration level: 1 / Current calibration level: 0.333333 / Fail"). Trying Jussi Vuorisalmi's Orienteering Compass 1.0.1 from the Jolla store also gives the maximum calibration 33% (as he warns) but does not point n 09:26:56 An officially supported LTS phone you can buy for many years would be useful. 09:27:46 Kinda like Pine sells the LTS version of Pine 64 board, that should be available for the next 5 years. 09:29:27 Something similar would be ideal for people wanting to start with Sailfish OS on well tested phone or to use a couple Sailfish OS phones for their project. 09:30:11 Nice idea. 5 years is a long time in the world of mainstream commercial phones though. 09:30:22 5 mins left :) 09:30:50 ExTechOp: Just tested, on my XA2 the calibration works as expected 09:31:18 flypig Indeed, considering phones are made nowadays with so much glue that even replacing batteries is rather difficult, if not wholly impossible. 09:32:10 5 years shouldn't be a high bar:) 09:32:28 Indeed, but the progress has slowed somewhat and many older phones are pretty good enough. 09:32:29 ExTechOp, yes exactly. It's not a good situation, but it does seem to be the case. 09:32:43 typing this on Xperia X 09:33:25 still a phone LTS could be three years ir something & non replacable batteries are indeed an issue 09:34:59 That's one reason I went for the XA2 Ultra, larger frame and bigger battery. 09:35:46 Speaking personally, I'd say Jolla has a great track record of supporting phones, but the hardware cycle is in the hands of manufacturers. 09:36:07 Alright time's up guys, moving on, as I have other tasks to take care of for the day :) 09:36:15 #topic next meeting time and date (5 min) 09:36:25 #info Next meeting will be held on November 14th 2019 at 09:00 UTC 09:36:32 All good? 09:36:36 Thanks for today Jaymzz, all good! 09:36:49 Thanks! 09:37:02 Thanks all for attending! Let's announce our topics on the planning page as usual! Cheers :) 09:37:03 Thanks Jaymzz! 09:37:14 Looks like none spoke up for a secondary meeting time, that fits people in America... 09:37:22 #endmeeting
